Velneshwar is a village located on the Western Coast of Indian state of Maharashtra, which is about 170 km from Ratnagiri district. Velneshwar is well-known for its rock-free beach that facilitates the easiness of swimming. There is an old temple of Lord Shiva near Velneshwar which is frequently visited by pilgrims. The village of Velneshwar is often considered to be the root of the Gokhale, Raste (Gokhale), Gadgil, Govande, Savarkar,Velankar families and has their family shrine. North of the Shastri River lies the idyllic village of Velneshwar. The quiet, coconut-fringed beach offers the visitor the ideal opportunity for swimming or just relaxing. There is an old temple of Lord Shiva amidst the picturesque locale that is regularly frequented by pilgrims and devotees. Velneshwar is the focus of attention once a year in March, when the Maha Shivratri Fair is held in honour of the god Shankar or Lord Shiva.
